Volume II: Chapter 161: Building a New Ship
The successive harvests and miscellaneous work of the various crops continued until early November, followed by the final ripening of sweet potatoes.
The yield of sweet potatoes was greatly affected by the rainy season for more than 20 days, and the yield was almost reduced by nearly one-third, only about 1,200 catties.
This rain is really not at the right time, and it is the most important stage of sweet potato fruit growth!
It is gratifying to note that all kinds of grain have been harvested, and there is not much to do lately, so I have completely relaxed.
You can eat a variety of delicacies with your belly open every day, and you can clearly feel that the amount of food you eat every day after having natural MSG is different from before.
More obviously, my body, the average daily amount of food more than before has made my body several pounds fatter and healthier!
At this time of the year, the last chance to go fishing before cooling down was being taken into the last chance to go to sea, but now this step has been cancelled and more time has been freed up.
This time, instead of continuing to knit clothes at home, I chose to go to sea.
Today's weather is not bad, the wind is beautiful, and the sea is relatively calm, which is perfect for going out to sea!
The sails on the boat were not there, but there was no problem with the oars, and even if it was a little slower, it would only take half a day to make a round trip.
In addition to the purpose of going to sea, I also have the intention of collecting some kelp, although it is just a vegetable and does not seem to have much effect, but I attach great importance to it.
In the final analysis, there is a lack of vegetables, and the taste of kelp is relatively high, so it is worth the risk!
I haven't been in the sea since I was bitten by a shark, and I haven't gone back to collect kelp in the shallow waters, and all the ones that were preserved before were eaten up at the beginning of the year.
It's still necessary to collect some more before cooling down, I like the taste and it's not a hassle to store.
Of course, collecting kelp only means going to sea once, it doesn't mean going to sea, and I have no intention of risking going into the water to collect kelp, and the safety risks far outweigh the rewards!
Before I set off, I prepared a two-meter-long bamboo pole with a sickle tied to its end, and it went to sea instead of me.
All I had to do was row the boat to the shallow water, and then I would park the boat in an area with kelp and cut it with a scythe and then go down to the boat, which was effortless.
......
The only trouble is that the distance is more than 10 kilometers, and it is not easy to paddle completely with the oars, and it is much more tiring than when I used the sails as power!
It is gratifying that the process of collecting kelp is quite smooth, and it takes less than an hour to get about 200 catties, which is the least difficult work, and a large kelp surfaces and is thrown onto the boat with a light hook.
It's rare to drive the boat over, especially in the case of pure manual, even if the two hundred catties of kelp exceed thirty catties after drying, I am still not satisfied, and I want to collect more.
Unfortunately, the ship denied my request at this point, and I could only rest on the shore with a little dissatisfaction and regret and began to return.
The buoyancy of the ship has dropped so much that it is no longer very usable, from more than 500 catties at the beginning to more than 300 catties now, except for my weight, it can only carry less than 200 catties.
Dry wood has rotted to varying degrees after soaking in water for a long time, and two or three years have passed in a blink of an eye, especially when the raft below has been in contact with seawater for a long time, and the dry wood is full of water again.
It can be clearly felt that the buoyancy is not as sufficient as it was at the beginning, and even after being fully loaded with 200 catties of kelp, the whole ship feels as if it is in the sea, because both layers of rafts are submerged in the sea.
Such a scene made me think it was very dangerous, and I threw 20 pounds of kelp to reduce a little weight before it changed slightly, but the safety and practicality of the boat needed to be reconsidered.
From the heart, it can be regarded as a hero, making indelible contributions to various construction work, and it is the only vehicle when moving.
But the tool is always a tool, it is useless to blindly talk about feelings, I can let it stop on the beach and never dismantle it as a souvenir, but it is impossible to let it go to sea again, because there will be safety risks!
Even though the number of times I go to sea is very small now, I still can't be lazy about what I should do, not to mention the occasional return to the island to check and collect kelp, which is more meaningful in preventing problems before they happen.
In case of special circumstances that require going to sea, at least you have the tools to go to sea, instead of looking at the sea and being stunned!
It's just that I'm going to build a new ship again, and the thought of building a ship in my heart is a refusal, and I'm not very willing to do it.
......
The difference from the beginning is the degree of tension, at that time, in order to explore Crocodile Island as soon as possible, it can be regarded as an ant on a hot pot, but at this time, there is no hurry to build a ship, after all, the demand determines how urgent it is!
However, taking advantage of the recent time and the fact that there is no shortage of materials, it was decided to build it first.
First of all, it is still the material, especially the dry wood that requires a large amount of wood is the most troublesome.
But this time the cheapness was picked up again, and there was no need to carry the wood to the beach after carrying it to the top of the mountain for processing, and there was no need to prepare for it at all.
Every once in a while, a certain area of cropland will be cleared, so there are different degrees of air-drying and different sizes of wood, which are piled up like hills, so a series of steps such as selecting trees, cutting trees, and so on are directly omitted.
Unlike the inland trees, most of the trees on the island are relatively straight and slender in shape, and a single tree can be cut off in two sections for shipbuilding.
Therefore, a small boat needs only more than ten trees of wood, and it can be built with a width of more than two meters.
The dimensions of the new ship are mostly the same as the previous ones, the materials are not very different, the previous ship is average in all aspects, but it also verifies the performance in all aspects, and overall it is the most suitable boat I can build at this stage.
With the blessing of ready-made plans and experience, the operation is also more handy, as long as it can have more than four or five hundred catties of buoyancy again, it is qualified!
The wood used in the new ship is more sophisticated, and all the trees used are more than 20 centimeters in diameter, and they are still nearly 20 centimeters in diameter after being cut into squares, but the length has been reduced by dozens of centimeters.
......
I'm not going to rebuild a sailboat this time, because although it is very labor-saving to use, but in the absence of suitable materials for sailing, I have to choose a more primitive boat, that is, a boat that glides manually.
In addition to the almost identical construction method and size, there are also some changes, not only the width has to be reduced by thirty or forty centimeters, but the length has also been reduced by half a meter.
Of course, the stability of the boat with a better width is better, but it is a pity that it is more laborious to operate purely manually, and this time I deeply experienced the difficulty of rowing!
In the future, if you don't have to travel back and forth between the two islands frequently, and if you don't need to transport a lot of supplies, it will be necessary to reduce it a little.
Even if the size of the drop is not for safety, there is still room for decline.
As for the structure of the ship, there is almost no change, and the two-layer structure is still chosen to ensure more sufficient buoyancy, and don't forget that even if you go to sea very rarely, you will not return empty-handed every time you go to sea!
Not only was there the case of harvesting kelp, but there was also the clay used to transport pottery, which required me to remove my weight and provide an additional weight of more than 200 catties, otherwise it would not be cost-effective to take the risk of going to sea once.
Before the shipbuilding started, I actually wanted to be lazy, and even wanted to block the exit of the fishing trap and build a ship directly inside, so that I didn't have to dig a small dock.
The time saved was at least three or four days, but I thought of the trouble of transporting sediment to pile up the water outlet of the trap and the trouble of later recovery, so I finally gave up!
The space in the trap is not small, but the size of the outlet is not small, and the height of two meters plus the depth of nearly two meters can make at least five cubic meters of dirt completely blocked.
What's more, the water outlet must be dredged again in the later stage and the water inside, after the gap is blocked, the water nearly two meters deep inside can not be removed at all, and it may be submerged at high tide.
So it's impossible to be lazy, you can only follow the steps honestly!
......
Fortunately, the length and width of the ship have been slightly reduced, and the size of the dock has naturally been reduced, and of course the workload will be reduced, which can almost reduce the workload of digging a pit for a day.
After seeing the strength of the waves for a long time, I became more and more bold, and even the important consideration that shipbuilding should choose a calm beach to dig a hole was directly ignored.
I chose the beach only a few dozen meters from the fish pond, and the reason for choosing this place is, of course, that it is close, not only close to home, but also closer to wood!
At the same time, it is closer to the sea, and when the tide is high, its waterline is half a meter upwards to the location of the dock.
There were signs of boldness and risk, but they were all based on certainty, and I was fairly confident that I would not be drowned, but that I would be able to launch the boat easily at high tide.
In addition, the drop from the sea is smaller, the depth can be reduced by about one meter, and it can save a day's work, which is very happy, because digging a pit can be completed in only two or three days......
The construction work has hardly changed from the previous boat, because I am quite satisfied with its structure, and after two or three years of intensive use, there is hardly a crack in it, which is trustworthy!
Three days later, the dockyard excavation was completed, and a week later, a new ship was built, and its beautiful appearance showed its dazzling appearance.
Compared with a ship, its workmanship is undoubtedly more pleasing to the eye, not only because the tools are more competent, but also because of the reason why you are calm and not impatient, and the details are quite good.
The next step is to go into the sea to verify its actual capabilities, and it is generally quite satisfactory, especially after the slight reduction in size, the handling has been greatly improved.
Although the forward speed is significantly different from that of previous sailboats, it is not too bad, barely able to reach the threshold of three knots, that is, almost six kilometers an hour.
Without a piece of plastic sheeting, the speed plummeted by 40 percent, which is a great challenge to people's physical strength, and it can be said that the loss is not heavy enough, but unfortunately this problem is not possible to be solved in a short time!
