The Bodhisattva of Incense replied, "I have no words to say, but with the incense of the heavens and men the heavens and men can enter the law." The Bodhisattvas sit under the incense tree and smell the wonderful incense, and they will attain all the virtues and Tibetan samadhi. To be a samadhi, the bodhisattva has all the merits of the bodhisattva. ”
Without words, just sitting under the incense tree can make all the bodhisattva's merits sufficient, and it is indeed incredible to smell the incense and enter the Tao! Shakyamuni Buddha further told everyone that there are not only those who do Buddha things with incense, but also those who do Buddha things with infinite convenience: "There may be Buddha land to do Buddha things with Buddha light, some to do Buddha things with the Buddha's light, some to do Buddha things with the Buddha's incarnation, some to do Buddha things with the Buddha's incarnation, some to do Buddha things with Buddha clothes and bedding, some to do Buddha things with food, some to do Buddha things with garden platform view, some to do Buddha things with 32 phases and 80 good shapes, to do Buddha things with the body of the Buddha, and to do Buddha things with the void; All sentient beings should enter into the Vinaya in this way. There are metaphors such as dreams, illusions, shadows, sounds, images in the mirror, the moon in the water, and hot times. There are Buddhist things done with sound, language, and words. Or there is a pure Buddha land, loneliness without words, without words, without words, without showing, without knowledge, without doing, and doing Buddha things. If so, Ananda! The majesty of the Buddhas is nothing more than the Buddha's deeds. ”
This is another story of incense told in the Buddhist scriptures, which is called "taking rice and incense", which is a very famous allusion.
"In the fifth volume of the Lengyan Sutra, there are 25 bodhisattvas who talk about their own practices, and each bodhisattva is different. The Xiangyan boy cultivates the incense cause method, and realizes the Tao by smelling the incense; The general trend is to the Bodhisattva chanting Buddha Yuantong; Guanyin Bodhisattva's ears are round. Everyone's method of learning is different. The Lengyan Sutra says:
The Xiangyan boy got up from his seat, bowed to the Buddha's feet and said to the Buddha: "I heard that I came to teach me to contemplate all things." When I quit the Buddha, feast and fast, I saw the monks burning incense, the fragrance came into the nose silently, I observed that this breath is not wood, not empty, not smoke, not fire, to go to nothing to come from, from the intention to sell the invention without leakage, such as to print my incense Yan number. The dust is extinguished, and the fragrance is dense and round, and I am an arhat from the incense. The Buddha asked Yuantong, as I proved, incense is strict! ”
This is the cause of Xiangyan Tongzi talking about his enlightenment, this passage is very Zen, good experience. He said, "I have come to teach me the truth of all things." Contemplating the reality of all dharmas is the void phase, and contemplating the reality of the dharma is to teach him the emptiness, and all the dharmas are illusory and unreal. Truth is true and not false, and knowing the true state of the Dharma is emptiness. Buddhism Xiangyan cultivates emptiness, "I quit the Buddha", Xiangyan said goodbye to the Buddha at that time, and he "feasted and fasted". The banquet is safe, and Song Huaiyuan recorded the fifth volume of "Shouleng Yan Jingyi Shushi Money" explained: "Those who feast obscurity, the banquet is quiet in the dark time." "It's fasting and meditating in the evening. Song Zixuan's collection of "Shouleng Yanyi Commentary Sutra" volume 5 explains: "I rested in peace in Xiang Xuan's banquet, in the quiet room. The quiet room, the place where the heart is washed, hence the name Qingzhai.
It's to meditate there. "When the monks burned incense, the fragrance came into the nose silently", when the incense was strictly in silence and learned the reality of the Buddha's teachings, suddenly I smelled the aroma of agarwood when the monks burned incense to the Buddha, and this fragrance suddenly entered the nose. Note that the word "lonely" is used in this place. Silence, quiet meaning. Silence is quiet, silent. The aroma of this agarwood comes quietly and suddenly, as if someone is following you behind you, and then reaches out and pats you, and you are surprised, because you suddenly smell the aroma.
"I look at this gas, neither wood nor empty, neither smoke nor fire", at this time, Xiangyan Tongzi had a doubt, the gas of agarwood is not wood or empty, not smoke and not fire, what is it? Song Kedu wrote "Lengyan Jing Note" and explained: "It is not wood, fragrant and has no phase. It is not empty, smells and smells. No smoke, no smoke. Not fire, no heat. To go to nothing, to extinguish the phase. Come from nowhere, have no life. By the intention of selling, the sixth is not the same as the five. ”
We can also think about whether the aroma is real, or is it illusory? Is this aroma born from smoke, or is it hidden in the fire? "To go nowhere, to come nowhere", when the aroma comes, there is no trace of it; When you can't smell it, the aroma suddenly goes out, and you can't find a trace of it. When he observed it in this way, he found that this incense corresponded exactly with the Buddha's teachings about the truth of the reality of the Dharma, the law of birth and death, and the selflessness, impermanence, and emptiness. Not only that, when Xiangyan observed this incense, his delusions suddenly disappeared. Intention to sell, meaning is the meaning of delusional separation. After the delusion is extinguished, there is suddenly no leakage of wisdom, and no leakage of wisdom is generated. "In an instant, the smoke is neither wood nor emptiness, neither smoke nor fire, there is nowhere to go, and there is nowhere to come", so the delusion disappeared and leaked out. "If you come to seal me, you will get the incense Yan number", such as to confirm that this enlightenment of yours is correct, so he gave him a name called "Xiang Yan", which is solemn with incense. "Dust extinguished", dust is what we just said incense is one of the six dusts, this is the smell, so it is called dust. Dust also refers to the habit of ignorance and troubles, "dust extinguished", this fragrance suddenly disappears, "the wonderful fragrance is dense and round, I get an arhat from the incense", I am an arhat by smelling the agarwood, "the Buddha asks Yuantong", Buddha you now ask me what method to practice? "As I have proved, incense is strict", to smell the incense and enlighten the Tao, this is the best method. 361 Reading
Each of the twenty-five Yuantong Bodhisattvas has a method that he is good at cultivating. What is the general trend of the Bodhisattva's cultivation? Chanting the Buddha Yuantong. What does Guanyin Bodhisattva practice? What is in the Lengyan Sutra? The root of the ear is round. The Xiangyan boy cultivates the Xiangyan Yuantong. The twenty-five Yuantong masters all have their own specialties. Xiangyan Tongzi entered the Tao because of incense, so he recommended everyone to practice the Xiangyan method.
Therefore, if we can really borrow incense to enter the Tao today, it is also worthy of praise, otherwise it is not necessary to simply burn money.
"In the early years of the emperor's reign, there was a monk in Yangzhou, who recited the Nirvana Sutra and was self-conscious; There is a novice chanting the Guanyin Sutra in the Xialin Temple of the East Mountain of Qizhou. The two of them suddenly fainted and died, but their hearts were still warm.
When the two arrived at the place of Hades, the king invited the novice to sit on the golden throne and the bhikshu to sit on the silver throne, and sent them back after the entertainment.
The bhikshu who recites Nirvana feels that the Yama King is not entertained, why is he not as respectable as a little novice? After returning to the sun, he came to the south to inquire about the situation of the novice's recitation.
Shami said: "When I was chanting, I had another place and clothes, and I started to recite incense and vows after burning incense and vows. ”
When the bhikshu heard this, he sighed, "I have sinned deeply, and I have not recited Nirvana, and my body and mouth are not pure, and I have only forgotten it." The ancients said, "It is better to have more evil than less good." ”
