Text: Chapter XVIII
The third floor of the house is a trapezoidal attic.
The only window in the attic faced the front of the lonely house, and a heavy curtain was scattered on the ground below the window.
Kelly turned her back to the stairs and knelt in front of the window, looking out at the rain outside. The shirt she was wearing was torn in large chunks, revealing several blood marks on her back.
Lannie, who was walking up the stairs, stopped and raised a hand towards Kelly's back. A palm-shaped orange glow appeared behind the other and gently patted her shoulder.
Kelly slowly got up and looked back at Lanny.
"Just to make sure," Lannie said, "it's really you." She looked down at the ground between them.
Dozens of burning candles line up in a bulging shape on the attic floor. To be precise, the shape looks more like a "Ω" character, except that the two vertices at the bottom are not concave inward.
"He knows everything." Kelly muttered, "I know you're coming, and I know how to deal with you." ”
"Well, whatever." Lannie replied faintly, "Are you ready to leave this damn place?" ”
Kelly bent down, picked up a candle, and pointed it at Lannie's face. "No, I don't want to." She gritted her teeth and said, "He won't allow it." ”
"Lanny, I need to have a few words with her." Kurt's voice came over the communicator.
"Or, let me just put her in the ball of light and push her out of the window." Lannie responded.
"Unfortunately," said Kurt, "the spirit won't let you do that." It's easy for it to stop you. ”
Lannie pursed her lips and reached down to remove the communicator.
An orange ball of light flew towards Kelly with a communicator and hovered in front of her.
"Miss Doon," Kurt's voice was amplified by a ball of light and passed into the attic, "you don't need to blame yourself for Donald's death. Even if it seems to you that he first took your place for murder and then committed suicide after that. ”
"I ...... Don't know what you're talking about. Kelly tilted her head to the side.
"It all started with a change in you." "This change caused Donald to stop tending to the fields and eventually led him to work as a maintenance worker in college," Kurt said quietly. In the house where you live, there is not a single window with curtains on it. Of course, this is the other way around. For an entire afternoon, the thing you thought was Donald was tormenting you. Please don't be sad about this, hurting humans is an instinctive reaction to such things. This incident shows in disguise that removing the curtains can make you feel miserable. Plus, Donald will drop you off at the door of the school building every time. In order to save you a few steps, he would first walk through the parking lot, drive into a cul-de-sac, and then turn around and come back to park, which is unconscionable. ”
Kelly glanced back at the rain curtain outside the window, then crossed her arms together and hugged them to her chest.
"Wildernessphobia." Kurt continued, "A rare mental illness and at the same time a change that happens to you. Patients may feel intimidated by open environments or crowds, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and even coma. After getting sick, you hide at home for a long time. In order to make you better, Donald probably thought of many ways, including the last one - to help you get a job as a dance teacher. There are only a dozen students to deal with, the working environment is indoors, and there is only one class a day, and the rest of the time can be rested at home. As a psychology professor, I can only say that I can't think of a better indirect therapy. However, there is one point that creates a contradiction. To reduce the amount of time you spend outdoors, Donald must drive you to and from every day. If he becomes a regular commuter, you will have to drive home by yourself after class. The interior of the building is not connected to each other, and in order to get to the parking lot, you have to walk through the entire square, and the empty and noisy environment happens to be unbearable. This makes it illogical for Donald to take the initiative to work as a maintenance worker. ”
"You're really, the more you talk, the longer it gets." Lannie rolled her eyes.
"I've been to the building where your husband works." Kurt continued, ignoring Lannie's words, "There's a women's bathroom at the end of the hallway on the first floor. The floors and walls in the bathroom were replaced with new tiles. I think it should be the fruit of your husband's labor. But actually, you know, he did that to cover up another thing. When you become a dance teacher, you feel like you owe Donald so much that you probably say things like 'don't want to be too dependent.' You decide to drive yourself to and from work, and Donald is a hundred uneasy about it. Not wanting to argue with you, he had to find another way and come up with an almost ridiculous solution. There is a wall in the women's bathroom that is not filled with anything, and it is located right between the dormitory building and the teaching building. Non-load-bearing walls are mostly made of wooden wall panels, and it is not difficult to remove one piece. If I'm not mistaken, there should be a narrow passage with water pipes and wires running through the back of the wall, and the wall on the other side of the path belongs to the school building. So just find another suitable entrance and exit on the other side of the wall......"
"Spout water dispenser," Kelly interrupted Kurt, "in the corner of the hallway." Donald had broken it earlier, so no one used it. After the dance class, I would wait a few minutes. It wasn't until the next class started, when there were no more students in the hallway, that I lifted the water cooler and burrowed into the hole that Donald had made in the wall. ”
"But this morning, there was another person in the women's bathroom, right?" "I'll make it clear first, we don't care what you did, who you killed, who helped you take the blame," Kurt said. We're here for one purpose – to take that thing that tortured you all afternoon. I'm just saying this to remind you of what kind of person Donald really is. Whatever it is in this house now has nothing to do with your husband. So, you don't owe it anything, and you don't need to do anything for it. ”
"I ......," Kelly said hesitantly, "I don't know." ”
"Now, I have a request for you." Kurt accentuated, "I know you've done something for that thing, and I want you to stop helping it." ”
"What do you mean?" Lanny looked at the communicator shrouded in the ball of light, "She did hit Steven. If you want me to say it, well done. What else did she help it with? ”
Several barbed tentacles emerged from the wall behind Lanny. The tentacles swayed in the air, stretching towards where Lannie was.
"Consciousness changes!" Dylan's shout came from the ball of light.
Lanny turned around hurriedly and raised her hands in front of her.
The ball of light enveloping the communicator flew in front of Lannie and spread out to form a barrier. The communicator fell straight to the ground.
A tentacle stabbed at Lanny, easily piercing through the barrier and stopping in front of Lanny's throat.
The light that formed the barrier suddenly collapsed.
Lanny slowly lowered her hands. "So, you could have killed us a long time ago." She whispered.
"Nobody said I can't ......," a hoarse voice echoed through the attic, "Kylie, oh my Kylie," the voice moved to Kelly's side, "we discussed it. Talking to strangers is not allowed. ”
Something nudged Kelly lightly.
"It seems that my education method is not correct enough." The hoarse voice continued, "Now, go down there and reflect on what you did wrong, so that you can be useful. ”
Kelly glanced at Lannie and took a trembling step down the stairs.
"So, you," the husky voice moved to Lannie, "my new Kelly, I have a gift for you. ”
The tentacles pointing at Lanny's throat retracted.
Lannie immediately raised her hands again. A cloud of orange light burst through the tentacles, pushing them in all directions.
However, none of the tentacles were blurred as a result, and they shook much faster.
Suddenly, a tentacle swung at Lanny, knocking her to the ground. Barbs on the tentacles cut through Lanny's clothes, leaving several wounds on the sides of her body.
A stream of air spread through the center of the attic, blowing out the candles on the ground. Then, several walls of faint light emerged around Lannie, enveloping her in the middle.
In this newly generated space, only a window-sized gap remained in the wall behind Lannie. Looking through this gap, you can see a dimly lit corridor.
