Chapter 40: The March of Death (7)

On the mountain road south of the Valley of the Falls, Roland's troops were on a rapid march. Looking back at the endless mountains and forests, Roland sighed softly.

Jade knew what was going on in his mind. He comforted: "Your Royal Highness, you need not blame yourself! they are already dead, and if their souls can exchange their decaying bodies for a precious day of evacuation, they will be relieved if they have knowledge, because it will save many lives!"

"The dead deserve respect, but I disturbed their souls, and they will definitely go to hell after death!"

Jade smiled, "I can vouch for you, the Grim Reaper will never be happy to take you in, because he fears that you will often get into trouble with him!"

The people around me were all happy when they heard it.

"It's been a day since we got out of the fighting...... Based on the enemy's movements in the past two days, I dare say that they have already begun to pursue! Jedt, if you were in command, how would you launch the pursuit?"

"I'll follow with a part of my forces, and then send another way to outflank the rear!

"But there are three days between them and the retreating people, and even if they have at least a day between us!" one of the heroes next to him interjected.

"I'm worried about the large number of people in front, it looks like they are all weak!" Roland shook his head and said, "What's more, they are not an army, and they won't be very fast!"

"Your worries are not unreasonable, Your Highness the Prince!" "From the Valley of the Falls to the Silver Horn, the cavalry only needs one day, the infantry has to walk for three days, and as for our men, I estimate that it will take nearly five days!"

"Yes, but we only have four days at most! If the enemy's terror knights are in charge of outflanking, they may reach the Silver Horn before we do!"

Roland's inference made everyone's hearts hang.

"Speed up the march, we must catch up with the main force at once, and escort them safely to the Silver Horn!"

Hearing Prince Roland's order, everyone immediately quickened their pace.

In the sky directly in front of them, a large flock of vultures swirled. Needless to say, they were waiting for some creature on the ground to die and feast on it.

Underneath them, is a fleeing force with no end in sight. Their faces were full of hunger, their steps were staggering, and their expressions were dazed, but they still persevered and tried to move forward.

Every now and then, someone will fall and can't afford it. There was no crying, no tears, people just gathered around the poor people, prayed silently, and then hurriedly buried the dead and continued on their way.

Everyone can't walk anymore, but if you can't walk, you have to keep walking, because if you stop, you will face death!

Their loud footsteps always attract some zombies roaming in the wild. The men in charge of the guard walked on both sides of the large procession, trying to avoid these hateful zombies attacking the tired people!

With so many people walking together, they were like swarms of locusts that covered the sky and swept away everything they could eat, even weeds, roots, and leaves!

As a result, the people at the end of the line had to walk farther away from the crowd in search of food that could feed them in the wild.

Now, a little boy is standing on the side of the road, looking forward to the dense forest ahead.

There is no child who does not like the woodland, where there is always a happy laugh. There are a lot of flowers scattered in the woodland, and there are a lot of unknown berries. The boys would climb the tree like monkeys, gnawing on the branches and shaking their feet. What about the girls? They had to look enviously at the tall branches, and their eyes were full of anticipation.

But not anymore! Very few people dare to go into the jungle, which is full of weirdness. Flowers may no longer bloom, and fruits may have withered. What is particularly terrifying is that there is always a terrifying black shadow shaking behind the trunk from time to time!

At the boy's side sat a tired woman. She is holding a baby in her arms and is sucking ** at the moment. But there was no ** there, and the unsatisfied baby kicked his hands and feet and began to cry loudly.

"Father is back!" the little boy cheered, and the woman's eyes immediately began to sparkle.

The little boy ran and jumped among the weeds, but his pace slowed down until he stopped.

Could that be his own father? He was covered in blood, his steps staggered, his eyes glazed.

In his hands he clutched two fruits, red and the color of his blood.

There was also a group of men walking around him, and their expressions were completely indistinguishable from his.

The little boy's heart clenched tightly. He tentatively called out, "Father, is that you?"

There was no answer. The men were limping, and their steps looked almost run.

They were still grinning, showing their white or yellow teeth!

"Get out of them!they're zombies!" In the distance, a group of knights galloped over, and the knights at the head shouted.

The little boy didn't move. His eyes were blurred.

In a blur, the boy saw the knights rushing towards him, bringing a whirlwind with them...... Later, he felt a warm, thick palm wipe the tears from his face and squatted in front of him.

The man had a beard and was like a knife, or he himself was a sharp knife!

His brow was locked in melancholy and strength. But at this moment, his eyes were full of love, like a loving father looking at his own child.

There were still moans and howls on the grass, and it was the zombies that were not yet dead and still struggling. The knights began to search in all directions, and with their spears they were silenced completely.

The man took the boy's small hand and walked over to a zombie that was still moving on the ground. The bones in his body may have been broken by the galloping horses, and he could no longer stand up.

"Is that him?" asked the knight, the boy.

The little boy nodded silently, his lips clenched.

A sharp dagger was stuffed into his hand. The knight patted him on the shoulder and said, "Since he was once your father...... Son, then you can give him one last ride!"

The little boy couldn't hold back any longer! His tears began to flow, but his lips were still clenched, and he was able to hold back some of his emotions.

He'd seen how people killed zombies outright. They always stick their swords or spears into the heads of zombies...... It is said that heart death cannot be called true death, but brain death can be called real death!

But...... If he wasn't brain dead, why wouldn't he recognize his favorite child?

The knights jumped off their horses and stood silently beside them.

Is he still his own father? The little boy looked with tears in his eyes: his eyes were cloudy, and he could not see a trace of love, but only the abyss of death in his pupils!

The zombie's clenched hands collapsed, and two red fruits slipped silently on the grass.

"You are brave, child!" said the knight, stroking his head, "now take this dagger and protect yourself and your family...... It's something he didn't finish doing, and you have to keep doing it!"

There was the woman standing by the roadside, trembling at all that was happening.

The knight walked over and shoved the two red fruits into her hands. The woman lifted her teary eyes and saw that the man's eyes were full of guilt.

"Live well! It's all for the children......"

"I will, thank you!" the woman couldn't help but look at the child in her arms.

"I beg your pardon, I didn't protect him well, and I didn't protect my people......" The knight's voice trembled, and he suddenly raised his voice: "But I promise that what has happened to you, I will ask the enemy to repay it a thousand times!

"You are ......"

"Please remember my promise! I am Roland, Prince of Dia!" Roland solemnly swore as he placed his right hand on his left chest.

The knights mounted their horses and began to gallop forward.

On the side of the road stands a large windmill, its huge blades spinning slowly under the impact of the current.

Beneath the windmill is a mill where heavily armed warriors are coming and going.

"His Royal Highness is here!" shouted the warriors excitedly.

Immediately a crowd rushed out of the mill to meet the cavalry that had just stopped.

"Welcome, Your Highness the Prince, you and your warriors are returning in triumph!"

"Tell me about the situation!" Roland shook his hand.

"Everyone is so tired that they can barely walk!" the man sighed, "We are seriously short of food, and people often leave the team without permission to look for food, and it is very common to fall behind! Moreover, the surrounding environment is very complicated, and from time to time there will be zombie attacks! I have to divide the soldiers into several teams, and come and go around the team to keep watch!"

"You're in good command, keeping everyone safe is our number one priority!" Prince Roland nodded.

"But then, if there are too many enemies, I won't be able to gather my troops in time!" the commander shook his head with a wry smile.

"Not yet!" Roland comforted, "at least not until noon tomorrow!

"Oh my God, Your Highness the Prince!" exclaimed the commander, "at the speed of our march, I don't think we will reach the Silver Horn by tomorrow evening!"

"We can't be slow, if we are slow, we will be flanked by the enemy! Let your soldiers go and help those who need it most, we can't leave anyone behind!"

"But I still have to be in charge of guarding ......"

"I'll take over the vigilance mission from now on!" said Prince Roland, "how many of you still have to fight?"

"Commander Jedt organized six thousand volunteers, he took a veteran brigade with him, and I have five brigades of people here!"

"Very good, you pick out two brigades to be responsible for collecting food, in the future, everyone's food will be provided by you, and it is too dangerous for the people to collect food by themselves, and it will seriously affect the speed of the march!"

"Yes, I'll do it right away!"

Roland walked into the mill and began to make a unified deployment of all kinds of people. The generals who had been ordered hurriedly took the order and left.

By the time Roland walked out of the mill, it was completely dark.

He rubbed his swollen temples vigorously as he watched the torch-lit people pass by him. The torches stretched endlessly, and there was no end in sight.

Now in the whole of Dia, there may only be these tens of thousands of living people left!, Prince Roland thought worriedly. These people are Dia's hope for the future, and I must find a way to get them all out!

There was no camping tonight. They hurried on their way, destined for a sleepless night tonight!
