Chapter 14: Cavendish
They watched with bated breath as the carriage moved in front of them, barely daring to make a large gesture, and Chris whispered to the four officers to stop what they were doing, and then told them to immediately extinguish the oil lamps and let them lie down honestly on the wet ground, including Mir.
They endured the stench of several corpses beneath the surface, as well as the strong smell of loose mud on the surface.
At some point, the woman in the hat stood like a ghost, standing on top of the gloomy carriage, her skin fair and tender, her body bewitching, her strange costumes, and the tone almost the same as the darkness.
Mir could faintly see the woman's skirt fluttering in the wind, except for the color of the woman's forehead, neck, and hands, but the lower half of her face, as if something was covering it, and his vision was blocked.
"Who is this guy?" Chris muttered.
As Mir prepared to answer Chris's question, it was as if the whole world was silent, he couldn't hear any unusual noises nearby, and he closed his mouth and continued to observe the woman for fear of being exposed.
Her hands were placed in front of her, and a shriveled and ugly head appeared in the palm of the woman's right hand, and then she raised her left arm and moved her mouth as if she were chanting some evil incantation, and her gestures were graceful.
In the stillness of the night, Mir couldn't hear at all, not even what was muttering, as if her ears had lost their hearing.
"Smack!"
The crisp sound of the whip suddenly broke the silence and resounded over Lafayette One, hovering continuously.
Mir saw another carriage speeding down the road from the right side of Lafayette One, and Mir and Chris looked at each other, unable to guess who the people in that carriage were.
The fourth carriage did not stop at the side of the road at La Fayette, but collided directly with the third, and only stopped moving forward when the strange woman disappeared at the same time as the carriage.
An old man with gray temples and a thick silver beard appeared even more strangely in the dark night, holding a slender cane in his right hand and an oil lamp in his left hand, and staggered to the depths of Lafayette One.
Mill saw the acquaintance, and then asked Chris to tell the officers to stand up and step forward and bow deeply to the old man as a sign of respect.
"Father Cavendish, thank you for saving us!" Mir said respectfully.
"Mr. Edward, we haven't seen each other in a long time, how are you doing?" Adrian Cavendish hugged Mir and smiled.
"I'm fine." Mill looked around and said, "Father, this kind of ghost place is too unsuitable for peaceful conversation, we can change places, how about it?" ”
"Obey your arrangement." Adrian glanced at the handsome man beside Mir with a cloudy gaze, and he said, "Oh? Detective Louie, you're there. ”
Chris bowed deeply again and replied, "Yes, Father, I am here to assist Mir. ”
"I'm glad you to come, so I don't have to go to the French police station to look for you." Adrian pointed to the carriage with his cane and said in a very serious tone, "Inspector Louie, come with you." ”
"Thank you."
Chris straightened up in confusion, and immediately turned his head and ordered his four officers to return to the police station with their tools first.
Alina had not been able to find Father Cavendish before, and Mill was tormented in the interrogation room of the police station, which made Adrian lose his favor with Chris.
Despite this, Chris had already sensed Adrian's change in attitude towards him, and appeared extremely unfriendly, Chris seemed to have thought of something, and seemed to have guessed about the incident about Mir in the interrogation room, because Adrian had a very good relationship with Mir.
Because Adrian is highly respected, Chris is afraid to explain the matter, even if he is wronged, Chris is afraid that he will collide with Adrian in the words of explanation.
Although Chris has an upright, serious and fair personality, he has offended many people in France, especially those who are sanctimonious.
In the carriage, Mir sat alongside the priest, curious how Adrian knew he was at La Fayette.
"Father, how did you find my whereabouts?" Mill asked.
"Yesterday I went to St. Louis Church to give a lecture, and by the way I visited Mr. Stoddard, and the next day at noon I received a letter from New Orleans, signed by the name of Alina Masséna, and if nothing happened to you, I would never have received a letter from Miss Masséna."
"I even saw Inspector Louie's conclusion in the letter." Adrian pulled the letter out of his pocket and handed it to Mir, who glanced at Chris with a sharp gaze.
Chris kept his head down, and at this time he didn't dare to look into Adrian's eyes, he was afraid that he would be scolded by Adrian, which meant that Adrian's identity was more majestic than Chris's father.
"Father, do you believe that?" Mir glanced at it cursoryly, and the contents of the letter matched perfectly.
"I never believed it until yesterday, when I heard Mr. Stoddard's complaints, and I believed in the existence of the ghost."
Adrian recalled what Amos had said, he was almost seventy years old, and he needed to close his eyes and think about it for a while.
"Uncle Amos? What did he say? Mir asked, surprised.
Adrian slowly opened his eyes and said, "Hmm... Mr. Stoddard said that Louisiana was flooded with refugees from Santo Domingue and that he could not make proper arrangements and had to ask the governor for a grant. ”
"Saint-Domingue?"
Adrian nodded and said, "Yes, I have the impression that she should belong to one of the refugees of Saint-Domingue, judging by the woman's strange attire, although I don't know what she wants to do at Lafayette One burial site, or what kind of threat she can pose to you." Nowhere is the ghost more fearful than Lafayette One, so I'm guessing you're here. ”
Mir didn't know much about Saint-Domingue, and if he couldn't find any clues about the murder, then he would go to Amos for help, at least Amos knew where the Saint-Domingue refugees were settled, and he needed to get on good terms with the Saint-Domingue refugees in order to find the ghost and the woman's whereabouts.
Chris was relieved to hear Adrian's change of opinion on the conclusion and give him a hint of the ghost's story, and he excitedly said, "Father, you have come at a good time!" A little later, we're not sure if we'll see tomorrow's sun – just like Ian. ”
Adrian didn't pay attention to Chris's words, he took a dark weird charm from his neck, handed it to Mir, and said, "It represents light and power, and if you wear it, evil and darkness will not be able to come close." ”
"Oh! No! Father, this is too precious! It's your token, and I don't deserve it. Mir politely declined.
